When You've Grown Distant
Distance can happen in the same room. This is about the bids that stopped, and the smallest way back that is still honest.

You are on the same couch. The show is on. At some point in the last year you stopped telling them the small thing that happened at lunch, because the small thing did not seem to land, or because you were tired of being the one who reached. They may have a version of this too. Distance is often two people, each waiting to be reached for, sitting close enough to touch.
There is another distance, the geographic one, where the body is actually gone. This piece can speak to both. It will not pretend a bracelet or a date night repairs a breach of trust. If the distance is covering a lie or a fear, read the trust piece before you plan a nicer evening.
Same room, far away
Closeness leaks out through missed bids. A bid is small. "Look at this." "How was the call?" A hand on a shoulder while you pass in the kitchen. When those get no answer, people do not usually make a speech. They stop offering. The relationship then looks "fine" and feels thin. Nobody had a dramatic exit. The exits were a hundred unanswered comments.
You can be the person who stopped, the person who was stopped, or both in the same week. Busyness is a real cause. So is resentment that never got a hearing. So is grief, a new baby, a parent in decline, a job that eats the voice you used to bring home. Naming the cause is not the same as accepting a permanent quiet.
Physical distance adds logistics and sometimes loneliness that no text thread can fake its way out of. Missing a body is not immaturity. It is information about what the relationship is asking you to carry.
Distance usually starts as a bid that did not get an answer, repeated until the bid itself felt foolish.
The bid you stopped making
Pick one bid you retired. Not the biggest need in the relationship. The comment about lunch. The question about their day that you replaced with silence. Offer it once, this week, without a test attached. You are not allowed to score them in the first minute. You are checking whether a small door still opens.
If you are the one who has been missing their bids, the move is to catch one. Put the phone down for the length of their story. Repeat the point back. You do not have to produce a sparkling response. You have to show that the story arrived.
If the bid is refused with contempt, do not immediately offer a bigger one. Contempt is not busyness. One clear refusal is enough data to slow down and ask what the distance is protecting.

Ten minutes without a project
Once this week, ten minutes in the same place with no task, no show you use as a wall, and no agenda about the relationship. A walk around the block counts. So does sitting at the table after the plates are cleared. Phones in the other room.
You do not have to fill the ten minutes with meaning. If talk comes, let it be ordinary. If it does not, you still practiced being unoccupied next to each other, which is the condition most bids need.
For a long-distance pair, the practice is a planned ten minutes of actual voice or video, not a day-long drip of reactions. Put it on a day you can keep. Missing it should be named, not smoothed over with a longer text. The point is a reliable pocket of attention, small enough to be real.
If ten minutes feels impossible because every silence becomes a fight, that is a different problem from distance. Do not use this practice as a stage for the fight you have been avoiding. Name that, and deal with the fight on purpose, another night.
Ten minutes with nothing to win is a bid. It is not a test of whether the relationship is still alive.
Coming back to a small moment
When you have gone cold, repair is often embarrassingly small. "I stopped telling you about my day. I miss that, and I am going to try again tomorrow." Or, "I was on my phone when you were talking about your sister. I want to hear it." Then hear it.
Do not repair distance with a grand weekend that requires both of you to be different people by Friday. Grand plans are easy to sell and easy to resent when the ordinary week never changed. If you want a date, make it one hour, specific, and soon.
Sex that has gone quiet is part of this for some people and not for others. Do not use closeness as a code that only means sex, and do not use the absence of sex as proof that the rest of the bond is fake. Ask what kind of contact is actually missing. A hand. A conversation. A want. Those are different repairs.
The way back is a specific bid you retired, offered again without a speech about how far you have drifted.
If distance is covering something else
Get another mind in the room when the quiet is dread, when you feel lonely beside them and also unable to tell them, or when every attempt at contact turns into the same unresolved injury. A useful person will not hand you a list of date ideas in the first session if what you need is language for the thing you have stopped saying.
Long-distance couples sometimes need help with the calendar and the resentment it breeds, not with a product that simulates touch. Touch across distance can matter when absence is the actual problem and both people want that signal. It does not matter when the absence is emotional and the body is already on the couch.
You can want the relationship and still need help finding a way to reach that does not feel like begging. That is an ordinary reason to ask.
If every bid feels like a risk you cannot price, the next step is a conversation with someone who is not inside the distance.
